"For thee who makest me, I shall come. Thee who breaks me shall come undone." -- the incantation to summon The Birch

The Birch is the titular character and anti-hero of the 2017 short horror film The Birch. A powerful nature demon, The Birch is summoned by the creation and destruction of a ritualistic talisman from birch wood, which can be found on a specific tree in the woods. She is sought out by a young man named Shaun, who seeks refuge from his bully, and is summoned when the bully breaks her talisman.

The Birch is widely considered to be the most popular monster on Crypt TV, with a multitude of merchandise bearing her likeness.

She is portrayed by Dee Sherwood Wallace.

Physical Appearance

The Birch is a humanoid being that stands eight feet tall. As her name suggests, her body is made of birch wood. The upper half of her head ascends into a "crown" of large branches wrapped with vines reminiscent of horns. She has no legs, but has long fingers made of branches and twigs. She has a skeletal face, deep soulless eyes, and crooked teeth.

Characteristics

The Birch is said to be a vengeful protector, of both the forest she lives in and those who ask for her aid. Her primary goal is to protect those "with love in their hearts", slaughtering anyone who threatens the safety of those who summoned her. She can be summoned by fashioning a talisman out of sticks, and speaking the phrase "For thee who makest me, I shall come. Thee who breaks me shall come undone." Simply put, The Birch will protect whomever creates the talisman, and will kill whomever breaks it. However, this could not always bode well, as The Birch could only care about abiding by her rules and not about whether the talisman was broken by an innocent bystander or the true intended target.

Background

At some point in the past, a book containing information about The Birch came into the possession of Shaun's family.

The Birch (2016)

A spellbound book is also a necessary part of the summoning ritual, which has been passed down to Shaun by his dying grandmother, who told him The Birch would look after him when his grandmother is gone. On his way home from school, Shaun is cornered and antagonized by his classmate, Kris, who chases him into the woods. Shaun reveals the talisman he crafted from twigs, and an enraged Kris breaks the talisman and prepares to attack Shaun with a pocket knife. They are both stopped by the arrival of The Birch, who attacks and mutilates Kris. Shaun and the Birch stare at Kris's corpse as The Birch coils her branches protectively around Shaun's hand.[1]

Milk & Cookies II (2018)

The Birch's symbol appears on an ornament on the tree in Delaney's flashback.[2]

This article is considered part of the Crypt Monster Multiverse. Though connected to the CMU, it is not part of the main timeline.

After critical success of the original short film, The Birch was given fourteen episodes of her own series on the Facebook page of Crypt TV.[5] On June 24, 2020, Crypt TV confirmed that the series would be getting a second season.[6] This series eventually kicked off the Crypt Monster Multiverse, which contained web television series that functioned as alternate realities of the original Crypt Monster Universe.

In the series, The Birch is the new identity of an adopted girl named Lanie Bouchard. After getting pregnant by her ex-boyfriend, Lanie became determined to connect with her baby despite her adoptive parents doing everything possible to separate them in order to preserve their reputation. Upon learning that her adoptive parents killed Laura to maintain that reputation, Lanie killed her adoptive parents, transforming into The Birch in the process.

The Birch's costume for The Hag, Dead by Daylight

In 2021, Crypt TV partners with online video game Dead by Daylight to release a "CryptTV Collection", which featured three new skins for three of their Killers. A Very Rare Outfit of The Birch was awarded to The Hag. Unlike The Look-See or The Mordeo Queen, The Birch is not an alternate character model, but rather a costume of her character donned by The Hag.

"The Birch is a vengeful protector living in a forest, protecting people with love in their hearts from those who threaten their safety upon being summoned."
